Reunion Homecoming Weekend - RECAP
Reunion Homecoming Weekend kicked off on Friday, October 21, with an Open House at the Asian American Activities Center, followed by a reception ceremony for this year's inductees into the Multicultural Alumni Hall of Fame. Bernadine Chuck Fong, BA '66, MA '68, PhD '83, the senior managing partner for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and president emeritus of Foothill College, was honored for her commitment to educational equity. to In her remarks, Dr. Chuck Fong gave tribute to her father, Dr. Frank Y. Chuck (‘22, PhD ‘25) who was the A3C's first inductee in 1995 and founder of the Chinese Clubhouse at Stanford.
SAPAAC's educational and inspiring Reunion Homecoming Weekend events continued with our annual Town Hall that featured Carmen Sebro, Undergraduate Admissions counselor; James Jordan, SAA Senior Manager of Regions & Diversity Outreach; and Cindy Ng, Associate Dean & Director of the A3C. Alums were concerned to learn that budget cuts implemented in 2008 continue to hurt programming at the A3C, where already reduced staffing has only been reinstated to 11 months FTE and 1 month part-time. SAPAAC encourages alums to join us in advocating for the full restoration of community center budgets. Cindy Ng also announced the departure of A3C’s Assistant Director Shelley Tadaki ('00, MA '03). Shelley will be leaving Stanford in January for new adventures in Los Angeles. A search for the new Assistant Director is currently underway.
Featured Town Hall guest speaker, Tommy Lee Woon, Associate Dean & Director of the brand new Diversity and First Generation Programs, acknowledged that support for first generation students has always been an important part of the work of community centers--particularly as first-gen students currently make up 20% of the undergraduate population. Dean Woon reflected that his work makes more explicit institutional support for first-gen students, and asked alumni to share their "educational heritage--stories about how their families came to attend college or pursue higher education--so that first-gen students know that they are not alone in their experiences.
After a delicious Chinese lunch, we saw a special panel featuring founding members of Southeast Asian American and Pacific Islander student groups. We heard fascinating founding stories as well as reflections from Quynh Tran ‘90, MA ‘92 (SVSA - Stanford Vietnamese Student Association), Rand Quinn ‘93, MA ‘07, PhD ‘11 (PASU - Pilipino American Student Union), Naree Chan ‘06 (SKA - Stanford Khmer Association), and Yang Lor ‘08 (Hmong Student Union). Panelists reflected the role of these groups in building community at Stanford and shaping their personal and professional development, and urged current students to continue their work to connect with and serve off-campus communities.

It costs $100 in lab fees and administrative to enter one donor into the Be the Match Registry. This cost is now paid for by a combination of donations from the community and a grant from the HRSA. However, these funds are not inexhaustible. AADP needs more help from the community and individuals like you to continue to make donor registration accessible to everyone.

Through what magic formula did the Shanxi merchants, the most powerful merchant group in pre-modern China, dominate the finance and commerce worlds of China for 500 years? In this presentation/roundtable discussion, speakers will also talk about the socio-economic significance of the banking system in Shanxi, the business culture of the merchants, and the design and the making of the movie.
This event is co-sponsored by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, the Confucious Institute at Stanford University, and the Center for East Asian Studies, and supported by SAPAAC.

SAPAAC at Golden State Warriors Game with Jeremy Lin
Wednesday, October 27, 2010
Thank you SAPAAC members for making our trip to see Jeremy Lin and the Warriors a success. It was great to see such a great turnout for our event, even though the Giants were playing in the World Series. We sold out all 50 of our tickets, so make sure to RSVP early for the next SAPAAC event.
The Warriors eked out a 132-128 victory over the Houston Rockets, with Monta Ellis scoring 46 points in the fast paced game. Unfortunately Jeremy Lin was not activated for the game so we did not get to see him play. But that did not stop us from enjoying the game, and reconnecting with our fellow SAPAAC members.

Reunion Homecoming Weekend
SAPAAC Events
Thursday, October 21 – Sunday, October 24
A festive, educational, and inspiring time for all the students and alums who attended this year's SAPAAC RHW events. Folks who attended SAPAAC's annual Town Hall Meeting, community lunch, and panel on activism and community building were introduced to new staff serving the APA community: Carmen Vice '09 - Undergraduate Admissions counselor and Julius Paras '91 - SAA Manager of Group Affinities & Diversity Outreach; current student perspectives on life at Stanford by Melissa Luu '12 and Steven Bhutra '12; updates on SAPAAC activities and advocacy efforts by SAPAAC President, Kathryn Chow Han '98, and Board members, Linda Tran '06 and Kevin Gao '06, After a lunch of Thai food to fill our stomachs, we were treated to reflections on the past 40 years of the Stanford APA student community by some of the alums who were a big part of that history: Francis Wong '79, Elsa Tsutaoka '87, Julius Paras '91, and Linda Tran '06. The afternoon panel was capped off by a beautiful performance of Amazing Grace by panelist, Francis Wong, jazz musician and co-founder of Asian Improv aRts. As Elsa Tsutaoka noted soon afterwards, “Francis sure sounds a lot better now than when he was a student.”
