What is the Advocacy & Education Committee?

SAPAAC works on advocacy and education, related to issues affecting the Asian American community at Stanford and nationwide. As Stanford graduates, we also take an ongoing interest in on-campus activism today, going beyond the AAPI community. We tackle:

(1) National AAPI issues: political participation by Asian Americans, inclusion in American society, the development of Asian American Studies, AAPI achievements in culture, sports, and media

(2) Stanford AAPI issues: faculty and administration diversity, supporting the Asian American Studies program and the Asian American Research Center at Stanford, encouraging the University to recruit Asian Americans to fill the administration’s leadership positions

(3) Stanford University issues: addressing issues of concern to all alumni, including the University’s treatment of students, handling of sexual assault cases, fossil fuel divestment, and other issues of ethical leadership by Stanford

Advocacy & Education campaigns are open to all SAPAAC members; you do not need to be a board member to get involved. Committee meetings are held bi-monthly. Contact our current chair, Takeo Rivera, to join the next meeting.

Statements & Letters

The SAPAAC Board occasionally comes together to issue statements in support of University actions that strengthen and sustain the AAPI community at Stanford. For example, to welcome new staff members at community centers and to praise new initiatives like the Asian American Research Center at Stanford. These statements are often drafted by the Advocacy & Education committee, and then voted on by the full SAPAAC Board. We also share letters from the community on issues of concern to AAPI alumni.
