Join SAPAAC for a musical outing! On the afternoon of October 6, at Stanford’s very own Bing Concert Hall, we will attend a performance of "Men of Iron and the Golden Spike - A Symphonic Oratorio," a newly-composed work that commemorates the thousands of Chinese workers who helped to complete the Transcontinental Railroad. The music was written by Zhou Long and lyrics are by Su Wei, and will be performed by a full symphonic orchestra, chorus, and vocal soloists.

“Some 20,000 Chinese laborers built the rail line through the Sierra Nevada mountains and across the Nevada and Utah deserts, enduring terrible extremes of winter and summer and other brutal working conditions. In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the railroad in 1869, the Center for East Asian Studies and the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project at Stanford University and the US-China Music Institute of the Bard College Conservatory of Music have commissioned this work to shed light on the laborers that made the railroad possible.”

SAPAAC has reserved a block of seats for our members, family and friends to attend “From the Middle Kingdom to the Wild West: A Symphonic Concert” featuring The Orchestra Now. In addition to “Men of Iron and The Golden Spike” the performance also features “The “Classic of Mountains and Seas,” an orchestral work inspired by Chinese mythology.
